Coaching for Performance: Growing Human Potential and Purpose was written by Whitmore. In this book, he explains about the power of coaching in leadership. Parallel to that, he also mentioned his GROW model. Now, let’s learn about the grow model and how it is active in performance coaching.

What is the GROW Model in coaching?

The GROW Coaching Model is a four-step process for organizing learning and development sessions for an organization’s team members. It is also defined as a coaching structure for unlocking capability and opportunities in discussions, conferences, and everyday leadership.  

GROW stands for:

  • Goal.
  • Reality.
  • Options (or Obstacles).
  • Will (or Way Forward).

How does the GROW model work?

Working with the GROW coaching model has the advantage of not requiring you to be an expert in your client’s specific situation in order to coach him.

The GROW coaching model provides a framework with general questions to elicit goals, obstacles, options, and more without ever offering advice or forcing a particular direction. In some ways, the coach serves as a dynamic vehicle for the development of his client.

Goal

Identifying the training’s aim is the first stage in the GROW model for coaching. This comprises both long-term and short-term goals. The following are the common grow model questions that help achieve clarity in terms of setting these goals:  

  • What would you like to improve/work upon?  
  • What is your goal related to this issue?  
  • How will you measure your goals?  
  • How will you evaluate if the issue has been solved?  
  • What are the benefits in achieving this goal?

‍Reality

‍ After set goal, the next step is ssess and describe the current situation or reality. This step will help you an idea of how far you are from achieving the goal. 

The following are the common grow model questions that help achieve clarity in terms of reality:  

  • What steps have you taken so far to achieve the goal?  
  • What motivates you to walk towards your goal?

Options

‍ When you know how far you are from achieving the goal, you will  have choices suitable for success as soon as possible. So, the third step in the GROW coaching methodology is to develop ideas and alternatives that lead you towards the goal. 

This is a stage which supports leaders in determining how to bridge the gap between the reality and their desired roadmap towards the goal.

The following are the common grow model questions that help achieve clarity in terms of exploring your options:  

  • What are the different choices to achieve the goal?  
  • What are the major benefits and drawbacks of each option?  
  • What skills and abilities do you possess that will assist you reaching the goal?  
  • What other options can you consider to achieve them?

‍Way Forward

The end step is the selection of one option which is the most suitable for your company. At this point, as a coach, one’s job is to help gain true clarity about their precise next steps and commit to them

The following are the common grow model questions that help achieve clarity in terms of determining your way forward.  

  • Which of the options will you choose to pursue?  
  • When do you intend to begin each action?  
  • How dedicated are you about accomplishing this goal?  
  • What method do you wish to use to hold yourself accountable for this goal?  
  • What’s the worst that could happen if you don’t take action? How will you deal with this?  
  • How will you evaluate your progress?

How can the GROW Model improve performance?

The GROW Model improves decision making, problem solving and goal setting, and puts learning and enjoyment at the heart of performance. The simple framework is valued by leaders and coaches, whether for a quick check-in, a team meeting, a coaching or mentoring session or planning a long-term change initiative.

The success of a coaching trajectory with the GROW coaching model also depends on the time and energy invested into the process by the client.

When you answer all questions, you will identify where you are. After that, you can set your goal and what you should do to achieve what choice is the most suitable.

GROW coaching skills unlock potential and increase performance by increasing self-confidence and motivation. Asking effective questions in a carefully structured way promotes deeper awareness and greater responsibility which leads to practical steps to accomplish goals and overcome obstacles.

The GROW Model has been seen to yield higher productivity, improved communication, better interpersonal relationships and a better quality working environment.
